The Coalition of Muslim Women Groups in Nigeria joined global counterparts to celebrate the 2025 World Hijab Day on Saturday, with a call on Muslim women who wear the hijab to continue demonstrating exemplary character in their everyday lives.
The women participated in awareness walks in Lagos and Abuja to highlight the importance of wearing the hijab.
During a lecture in Lagos, Alhaja Sherifat Ajagbe, the Amirah (president) of the Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) Lagos State chapter, emphasised that the world should unite to celebrate women’s resilience and advocate for their fundamental rights.
She said, “We celebrate the courage, faith, and resilience of women who wear the hijab. It symbolises strength and empowerment, even in the face of adversity. The hijab is not just an article of clothing but a profound expression of devotion, identity, and self-respect.”

Other speakers urged women wearing the hijab to uphold high moral standards. “When you wear the hijab, you must follow the will of Allah and not act on your desires. Submit to Allah as a Muslim,” said Alhaja Khadijab Abdulwahab.
Alhaja Khadijab also advised those facing workplace discrimination to be mindful of their behaviour, stressing the importance of being just and trustworthy, and avoiding actions that could lead society to shun them.
Meanwhile, Disu Kamor, Executive Chairman of the Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC), called for stronger global solidarity with hijab-wearing individuals and advocates.
In a statement, Kamor highlighted the significant role of hijab-wearing individuals in promoting peaceful coexistence and fighting discrimination.
“Your devotion, resilience, and sacrifice are an inspiration to all,” he said, acknowledging the challenges faced by hijab-wearing women in societies where religious expression is often contested.
As the day is observed worldwide, Kamor urged collective action to create a world where individuals can live freely without fear of discrimination or persecution.
