 More Nigerian youth are becoming drug addicts, while Nigeria as nation is gradually graduating from a drug consuming nation to a drug producing one.  
Despite efforts by the operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in curtailing the menace of production, circulation, marketing and consumption of illicit drugs, more people mostly youth are being recruited on daily basis by drug barons to serve as couriers.   
Today, the trend of drug abuse has penetrated campuses of our universities. Students especially those from well-to-do families are increasingly joining the ugly trend of drugs abuse.
 Drugs like Indian hemp, which is commonly produced in Nigeria and others like methamphetamine, syrups and tablets containing codeine that are capable of intoxicating people are found in public places including campuses of our universities.
Drug has a negative effect on the lives of teenagers and the youth in general. Drug abuse has grave health implications on teenagers.  It generally affects teenagers’ development.
The teenage age is the most crucial stage in the development of human beings; it is the time of building the foundation for the brighter future. Drug abuse desolates and derails every plan to build a brighter future life for a teenager.
Social effect: When a child is into drug abuse he will no doubt be stigmatized and there is every tendency for the stigma to live in such a person for the rest of his/her life. A drug dependant person often requires recovery, rehabilitation and most importantly reintegration into the society.
Crime: drug abuse leads to criminal tendencies among teenagers. It results to deviant and abnormal behavior which will end in making the victim a social reject. And it also leads to drop out in school.
 Finally, my advice to fellow students of universities is to desist from any act capable of engaging them into drug abuse as it will affect their health, studies and indeed future. Student unions in our universities should intensify campaign against the ugly trend through rigorous sensitization and enlightenment camping in our campuses. Government on its part should also evolve modalities for the fight against drug abuse in university campuses.
