Counsel to an internet fraudster, Barrister M. A. Bello, has told Justice Adebayo Yusuf of the Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin that his client, Yusuf Olarewaju (30), intends to use the cars recovered from him by the EFCC to start up car business.

EFCC arraigned the defendant over a $30,000 (N40m) fraud following his arrest in October.

Olarewaju, a native of Erin-Ile in Oyun LGA of Kwara State was arrested after “actionable intelligence about the activities of some syndicates of fraudsters operating in the town”, the EFCC told the court.

According to the EFCC counsel, Andrew Akoja, the suspect was “found to be in possession of one iPhone 14 Pro Max, a Toyota Corolla, a Mercedes Benz GLK and a Toyota Camry.

EFCC said, “While using a fraudulent email, [email protected], Yusuf posed as one Smith Katie, a white female from Missouri, USA, to strike relationships with one James Gibson (Jimmy) and Stephen Speer, both of who he swindled to the tune of $30,000 between 2021 and 2022.”

Justice Yusuf adjourned the case to November 23, 2022, for judgment and ordered the remand of the defendant in the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) in Ilorin.
