A middle-aged woman, Kudirat Kilani, has dragged her husband, Suleiman Kilani, before a customary court sitting in Ake, Abeokuta, Ogun State, seeking an end to their 28-year-old marriage.
The mother of five accused her husband of neglecting his matrimonial responsibilities, saying she had been shouldering alone the needs of the home and upbringing of the children.
Kudirat said her husband wouldn’t buy even a tube of toothpaste for the home, alleging he would rather use the tooth brush with water any time toothpaste was exhausted in the home, rather than a buy a new tube.
“My husband has abandoned his responsibility as a father. He doesn’t care about what the children eat and put on. I have invested so much on him. The businesses I helped him put together at different times all failed,” she declared.
But Kilani expressed dismay that the divorce-seeking wife would accuse him of acts of irresponsibility after 28 years of marriage.
“She claimed I could not afford to buy toothpaste for our use. That’s unfortunate. I have receipts of my children’s school fees here, which I can tender before the court. My wife is not ready to be submissive. She’s ungrateful. I admit that she had assisted me but I have done more as the husband,” he said.
Alleging that Kudirat was adulterous, the respondent prayed the court to dissolve the marriage as filed by her.
The president of the court, Mrs Olorunwo Sam-Obaleye, adjourned the suit till October 10 for judgment.
