A middle-aged woman, Esther Adeoye, yesterday prayed a customary court sitting in Ake, Abeokuta, Ogun State, to dissolve the marriage with her husband, Sefiu Adeoye, over constant beating.
Esther, a mother of three, described Adeoye as “an unrepentant wife beater and irresponsible man.”
She told the court that she had filed a divorce suit in 2008 following her husband’s obsession for beating her, but had to withdraw the case when he begged for forgiveness.
The divorce-seeking woman, in an emotion-laden voice, said he pushed her to the wall when he started to beat her mother again.
“We have four grown-up children. The first child is now 20 years old, the second 18 years old and our twins are 15 years old. We are not new in the marriage. And despite that, he beats me mercilessly. He once beat my mother.
“When I filed the first divorce suit in 2008, he came to our house, prostrated and begged for forgiveness. I had to withdraw the case. After we settled that, he returned to his old ways. Apart from that, he doesn’t care about the welfare of the children,” Esther said.
The respondent was absent at the court proceedings.
The president of the court, Mrs Olorunwo Sam-Obaleye, adjourned the case till October 10, 2018 for her ruling.
