A customary court sitting in Agege, Lagos, yesterday dissolved a four-year-old marriage between Mrs Fatima Akinwumi and her husband, Mr Sadiq Akinwunmi.

Fatima, an indigene of Oyo and a mother of one who resides at Fadahunsi St., Okeira, Aguda-Ogba in Lagos, had on August 17, 2017 approached the court for the dissolution of the marriage over allegations of lack of love and constant battery.

The president of the court, Mrs Ibironke Elabor, said the marriage had broken down irreconcilably and dissolved the union. 

“According to the evidence given by both parties, the court observed that the marriage had broken down irretrievably and the petitioner had suffered so much loss due to constant beatings by the respondent. Therefore, it is without prejudice but in the interest of peace, the request of the petitioner,” she said.

Fatima had told the court that she was insisting on the dissolution of the marriage due to husband’s constant beatings and lack of care for her and their child.

The petitioner, a 200-level student of the National Teachers Institute, Kaduna, alleged that the respondent was no longer in support of her quest for higher education, as he had promised when they got married in 2014.
