When the news of Daso’s long awaited wedding surfaced over a year ago, many, particularly fans of the actress, thought it would mark the end of her usually energetic roles as the antagonist in films but contrary to that expectation, up to date, she still features in films. Her roles have been modified and the actress has also minimise the number of films she appears in.
“I have not quit filmmaking even after I got married. My husband is a very civilised person and he was the one that suggested that I continue with my films just like other women are doing in other professions. He only encouraged me to uphold my dignity and shouldn’t engage in anything that will jeopardise my marriage or tarnish my image. It was based on that that I felt going back to the screen was a good idea and I conceded therefore. But fans should have it at the back of their minds that the Daso they will be watching now is a new Daso with entirely new roles.
“I believe I am among the most respected female artistes in the industry and I believe being married and still being active in the film industry will give me more credibility so long as I respect myself and play befitting roles. I know I have come of age and therefore do not entertain any fear of being disrespected. Even at locations, I always caution the youngsters on their behaviours and to portray the typical Hausa woman in a modest way,” said Daso.
Asked whether she cares about the less than sparkling reputation people have about filmmakers, she said she doesn’t see filmmakers different from other career women who engage in various businesses and professions despite being married.
New Daso, new roles
On her new roles, Daso maintained that she now only accepts “calm and descent roles” and also only feature in very few movies as she devotes a greater part of her time to her matrimony.
“Now, I have resolved to be doing just four films every year. I featured in only four last year and have already been booked for the four I intend to do this year too. Presently, I have done one, Nuratu, which will hopefully be released anytime from now. The other three will be done at different times throughout the year. More importantly, I don’t just accept to play any role now, I am very selective of the roles I play and they have to be contrary to what they used to be in the past. Now I prefer more decent and calm roles. My role in one of my recent films, Fisabilillah tells it all,” she emphasised.
However, there have been speculations that her husband even goes with her to locations. On this, the screen icon said, “I know my husband is very supportive but honestly he has never been to a film location as it is purported by people. He is a very busy person and doesn’t have the time to do that. I will please want members of the public to mind their business and let my husband be. I am the film actress and not him so their stare should be limited to me alone. People should please learn to say the truth at all times,” she advised.
For her, life as an actress has been so fulfilling and will therefore not mind if her children will show interest in being filmmakers. “If I am blessed with children and they decide to be in the film business, they will definitely have my blessing. My parents were not into the film industry but they gave their blessings when I decided to join the industry and here I am today. So if my children want that, I will certainly endorse it,” she said.
Talking about life in matrimony which seems so fascinating to the film star, she said, “I believe marriage is to a large extent what you take it to be. As for me, it is one of the greatest things that ever happened in my life and I am therefore doing it wholeheartedly, with full commitment. Since we got married last year, we have been living a wonderful life with no major problem and we don’t pray to encounter any in the future. We live the western way and I took it upon myself to do all the house chores myself without employing anyone to do it for me.
“I make sure I give my husband the time he deserves and that is even the reason why I limit my number of films to just four a year. For the one year I have been in matrimony, I realised that for any couple to enjoy being together, patience and tolerance must be ensured. And also, the couple must at all times strive harder, they need to go the extra mile in doing things that will fascinate their partner and renew their love. That way, the going might not be as rough as many have been,” she maintained.
Even though she was reluctant to talk about her husband, she said she met him through phone and one thing led to another and they are today happily married. “You know to get phone numbers of actors is not difficult, that was how my husband got mine and he called and made his intention known and we found ourselves suitable for each other. We then decided to be life partners and with the help of God, we are happily married”.
She concluded by urging her fans to continue to pray for her. “I love my fans just the way they love me too and they should please continue to pray for me”.
