A male retiree, Biliaminu Kehinde, yesterday dragged his wife, Afusat, before a customary court sitting in Ake, Abeokuta, seeking an end to his 39-year-old marriage to her over alleged threat to his life.

Kehinde, who resides in Adigbe, Abeokuta, equally joined his 34-year-old son, Shehu Kehinde, in his petition to the court that the two respondents wanted to kill him.

He alleged that his wife and Shehu had sent him packing out of his home twice over his inability to meet up to their demands on feeding.

The retiree told the court that his son was battling mental illness and had not been working, but was only relying on his own N18,000 monthly pension payment for his (Shehu’s) feeding and medical bills.

The petitioner maintained that despite his son’s health challenge, he was fit enough to work and earn a living but would rather sit at home and do nothing.

Kehinde expressed regret that the son enjoyed the maximum support of his mother, alleging that any day he (Kehinde) failed to provide sufficient money to feed mother and son, the two of them would conspire to insult and humiliate him.

“In the last two years, I have been sent out of the house I built myself by my wife and our son. Just last week, I gave my wife N500 to prepare a meal, but she told me it was not enough. I had to collect my money.

“When she informed my son about the development, he flared up. He attempted to stab me with a broken bottle before some youths in the area came to my rescue and beat him mercilessly,” he narrated.

The pensioner, who claimed to be nursing hypertension, urged the court to dissolve the marriage for the sake of his life. “They want to kill me. But before they succeed, please help me,” he prayed.

The respondents were not in court.

However, the petitioner’s uncle, Sunday Akinbode and his younger sister, Risikat Adenekan, who were in court, testified in his support and urged the court to grant his prayers.

In her ruling, the president of the court, Mrs Olorunwo Sam-Obaleye, ordered another hearing notices on the defendants and adjourned the case till November 12, 2018 for hearing.
