Eyes witness’ accounts of the event said the two persons died as a result of high degree of burns sustained during the fire outbreak. The two persons who were identified as Bala, 20, and Ayuba, 18, were students of Makaranta Appolo, a traditional Islamic school for reading Qur’an on slates.

Surajo Muhammed, a student of the school, recounted that the fire outbreak started around 12 midnight while everyone was asleep. He said no one could ascertain the cause of the fire outbreak.

“When we noticed the fire, we called on sympathizers who assisted in putting the fire out, but before then Bala and Ayuba had been burnt while all our belongings, including clothes and other properties were already burnt. The rescuers then helped us to take our injured colleagues to Umaru Musa Hospital, Bulunkutu.

The Borno Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Abdu confirmed the incident. He advised people to always quench burning fires after use, especially during hamattan season, saying it could easily spread and cause disasters.  

Kanem Trust reports that there was a similar fire incident recently in Tashan Joni, on the outskirts of Maiduguri, on the way to Damaturu. Though no one was reported dead, over 40 shops were destroyed.
