The North West Development Commission (NWDC) has announced the cancellation of its foreign scholarship scheme, following a new directive from the federal government prioritising investment in local education.
The decision was disclosed in a statement signed by the commission’s management on Thursday, May 8, 2025.
It also aligns with the Federal Ministry of Education’s directive issued on May 7, 2025, and signed by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Boriowo Folasade.
Daily Trust reports that this is coming barely three days after a report that the commission was embroiled in an internal crisis over the scholarship programme.

The managing director of the commission, Professor Shehu Abdullahi Maaji, confirmed the development to Daily Trust in a phone conversation.
The statement said the new policy is part of a broader effort to strengthen Nigeria’s domestic educational institutions and promote indigenous capacity building across all regions of the country.
“In line with the federal government’s recent directive to prioritise local education in Nigeria, the North West Development Commission announces the cancellation of applications for foreign scholarships,” the NWDC stated.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to aligning its programmes and initiatives with the national agenda and assured stakeholders that updates on alternative educational development opportunities would be made available in due course.
