An FCT High Court in Gudu has adjourned the adoption of final written addresses in the N1.64 billion fraud trial of former Taraba governor, Jolly Nyame until Jan. 23, 2018 at the instance of the prosecutor.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged Nyame in a 21-count charge of misappropriating Taraba funds to the tune of N1.64 billion while in office.
After prosecution’s case and Nyame’s conclusion of his defence on October 11, the trial judge, Justice Adebukola Banjoko adjourned the matter to December 5th for adoption of final written addresses.
However, when the matter came up today, counsel representing the EFCC, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), told the court that he needed to put the proceedings in order to establish more facts on the case.
Jacobs apologised for the delay in submitting his written address, which he blamed on recent personal challenges he was facing and his busy schedule that include appearing in courts on daily basis for the prosecution of corruption cases.
He said while he had already written 50 pages of his final address, he would be applying to the court for adjournment to a short date to complete it.
Justice Banjoko in granting the application noted that it was Jacobs who complained on October 11 that today was too far when the court adjourned for almost two months to enable the filing of the addresses.
She said she granted the request by giving him more time to enable him file his written address so that the defence could respond in time.
She added that she also needed to look at the addresses of both counsels thoroughly before adoption on Jan. 23.
