N10m for grabs in Abuja’s 2nd choir awards

The second edition of the National Choir Awards will be hosted in Abuja, in July this year, with N10m and other prizes slated to be won by contestants.

Convener of the award, Mr. Oti Jonathan Idowu, said this on Saturday in Abuja at a stakeholders’ meeting and news conference on the award.

According to him, the Abuja Choir Awards embraces Max Community Choir, Contemporary Choir, Classical Group, Accappella group and Gospel Bands.

Idowu said, “The Abuja Choir Awards would be hosting 250 Choirs on stage. Participation is, minimum of 15 persons in a Choir and a maximum of 200 persons in each group or Choir.
“The grand prize for the winner is N5,000,000; the first runner up and second runner up will win N3,000,000 and N1,500,000 respectively, the N500,000 would be for consolation prizes in other categories. There would also be best music director, best music conductor and best song composition awards among others.”

He recalled that the success of the maiden edition hosted in Lagos State, led to the clamour for the second edition slated for Abuja.

He said that the show is aimed to support, train and bring choirs together in a beautiful setting where people can learn, develop and thrive as a group.

He said, “This would inspire people to experience the power of interaction by singing together, unrelated to artistic levels. The approach will challenge personality and team spirit likewise.”

Also, the Project Manager of the awards, Mr. Chinakwe Moses Uzorchi, said that Choirs are required to perform 12 songs and that song each performance would be judged with song creativity, song composition, choir costume, choreography dance and stage management.

“Choir must have a conductor. Choir elimination will be done in two phases, these include, Choirs with lowest audience vote, performance and judges vote. Four Choirs would be eliminated in each week,” Uzorchi said.

He also said that all participating choirs would be interviewed live on some designated television and radio channels and that the event would run for 12 weeks, airing on the designated channels.
