‘N4.37bn Kaduna science schools to be ready by April 2019’

The ongoing construction of six science schools worth N4.37 billion by Kaduna State Government with support from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) will be completed by April 2019, the Project Manager, Malam Shehu Isa, has said.
The two science schools being constructed in each of the senatorial district of the state are sited at Hunkuyi, Pambegua; Rigachikun, Buruku; Jere and Manchok.
According to him, the projects which include construction of classrooms, administrative blocks, laboratories, workshops, store, library, hostels, kitchen, cafeteria, security post, sporting grounds and staff quarters among others are presently at various stages of completion ranging from 20 to 30 percent.
He further explained that the construction, which was a one-year project began in July 2017, but experienced delay as the initial plan of constructing four schools was increased to six by the current administration for the purpose of equity.
The project manager listed contractors handling each of the project, saying the science school at Hunkuyi was awarded to Havage Engineering Services at the cost of N755.9million while the one at Pambeguwa was awarded to Micans Nigerian Ltd, at N722.98 million.
Also, the school construction work at Rigachikun was awarded to Gamji Nigerian Company Ltd at N714.2million; Ummul Abiha Nigeria Ltd for the Buruku site at N714.3million; Axaka Nigerian Ltd is handling Jere site at the cost of N705.35million while Manchok site is being handled by Edi-Jen Companies Nigerian Ltd at the cost of N757.29 million.
Isa however said that the N4.37billion exclude the amount for the supply of learning materials, equipment, furniture and capacity building for teachers.
Earlier, the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Ja’afaru Sani, had said that the goal of the project was to promote and boost science and technology education in the state; saying that the schools will be equipped with world class facilities.
“We want to have an environment where our students would at basic level be acquainted with the basic rudiments of science and technology for them to grow up and become inventors, scientists and technologists.
“The world is technology-driven and all efforts must to be made to lay the necessary foundation for children to develop interest in the field of science and technology,” he said.
