The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has announced that nine states are yet to access about N40 billion remaining from the N121 billion backlog of 2024 matching grants.

UBEC’s Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, disclosed this during the 27th quarterly meeting themed “Bridging the gap between planning and performance towards achieving basic education.”

She said 27 out of 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have so far accessed N78.6bn.

“Out of the 2024 backlog, we inherited over N200bn. But through intensive engagement, almost 70 percent has been accessed. Presently, less than N40bn remains, with three states already lodging applications to access their funds,” Garba said.

She said while the sector has sound policies and robust plans, weak implementation continues to hinder results.

Garba called for effective tracking mechanisms, programmatic adjustments, and stronger partnerships with local governments and communities to deepen accountability and improve outcomes.

Representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat said investment in basic education was critical to national development. He urged administrators to confront challenges limiting progress.

The Dean of SUBEB Chairmen, Prof. Shehu Adaramaja, said the meeting aimed to strengthen mechanisms for effective reporting and evidence-based decision-making.

He urged education managers to embrace digital platforms, data-driven approaches, and regular student assessments to monitor progress and drive improvements in teaching and learning.
