The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed over 618 tonnes of fake, counterfeit and expired drugs and other unwholesome regulated products worth N10,190,910,338 at the Kalibawa Destruction Site along the Kano-Daura highway.

The substandard goods were seized from the seven North Western states of Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto and Zamfara.

Also, the agency, on Thursday, destroyed counterfeit, substandard, expired, banned and unwholesome pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food products estimated at over N55 billion in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The destruction exercise, held at the Moniya Dump Site on Akinyele Road, marked the South West Zonal Flag Off Ceremony for the elimination of unsafe products from circulation.

NAFDAC’s Director General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, said the destruction was a definitive statement that the era of impunity by unscrupulous elements   endangering the lives of Nigerians through fake and dangerous products was over.

The DG, represented by Nantim Dadi Mullah, Director North West Zone, said NAFDAC had the mandate to safeguard public health and ensure that every food, drug, cosmetic, medical device and chemical product in Nigeria met stringent standards of safety, efficacy and quality.

The NAFDAC boss noted that the destruction exercise was part of a continued strategy to prevent expired and counterfeit products from being reintroduced into circulation.
