The Director General of the National Agency for Food Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Moji Christianah Adeyeye, has revealed plans to completely phase out the production of high concentration alcohol in sachets, small volume glass and Poly-Ethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottles.
In a report by the World Health Organisation (WHO), alcohol consumption contributes to 3 million deaths each year globally as well as to the disabilities and poor health of millions of people.

To this end, the agency has revealed, on Friday, through a press statement that no new alcohol products in sachet and small volume PET or glass bottles above 30% ABV will be registered by NAFDAC.
In addition, the agency stated that: “To reduce availability and curb abuse,…producers of alcohol in sachets and small volume PET and glass bottles are to reduce production by 50% of capacity prior to January 2021.”
The NAFDAC DG ascribed uncontrolled access and availability of high concentration alcohol in sachet and small volume PET or glass bottles as a factor contributing to substance and alcohol abuse in Nigeria with its negative impact on the society.
She insisted that irresponsible alcohol consumption has a negative effects on public health as well as safety and security of the public.
She urged the public to take caution in the consumption of alcoholic beverages and avoid unregistered alcoholic products.
