NAFDAC warns Nigerians against abuse of antibiotics

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians against abusing antibiotics. 

NAFDAC Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, gave the warning Sunday during  the virtual 2021 World Antimicrobial Resistance Week. The theme was ‘Spread Awareness, Stop Resistance.’

She said there was an increasing rate of antibiotics abuse among the populace, adding that this had accelerated the process of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and  led to avoidable deaths.

She said the war against AMR has, not only gained prominence and global attention but, had also become a significant battle that the human race must win. 

She said the 2021 World Antimicrobial Awareness Week targeted professionals in the healthcare sector, veterinarians, animal husbandry professionals in livestock production, plant pathologists and individuals using antimicrobial agents.

“The emergence and spread of drug-resistant pathogens continues to weaken the health systems’’, she said.

She said NAFDAC had put in place some regulatory measures to curb the emergence and spread of AMR.
