The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has sealed a contract for the construction of its new Corporate Headquarters and Air Traffic Management (ATM) Centre in Abuja.
Speaking at the contract signing ceremony in Abuja, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of NAMA, Engr. Ahmed Umar Farouk, described the project as a strategic investment aimed at aligning Nigeria’s airspace management system with global best practices.
Daily Trust reports that NAMA, whose headquarters was relocated to Abuja in 2020 by the immediate past Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika has been operating in a rented apartment since then.
The agency has accrued billions of naira in rent since the relocation.
The MD while justifying the new headquarters explained that the new facility will serve a dual purpose by housing NAMA’s Corporate Headquarters and a centralised Air Traffic Management (ATM) Centre, representing a major operational shift from the previously decentralised system.
According to Farouk, the ATM Centre will consolidate airspace control functions currently managed by the Kano Area Control Centre (ACC) and the Lagos Area Control Centre (ACC) into a single, integrated national facility.
“This structure represents far more than office space,” he said, adding, “From this single facility, air traffic across the entire Nigerian airspace will be managed and coordinated, significantly enhancing efficiency, safety oversight, and operational effectiveness.”
He noted that the consolidation would also strengthen Nigeria’s compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices.
Farouk stressed that the facility would house critical and sensitive operational infrastructure, making quality, safety, and durability non-negotiable.
He therefore charged the project contractor, NHD Interbiz Projects Limited, to strictly adhere to engineering excellence, structural integrity, and internationally accepted construction standards.
He assured that NAMA’s management would closely monitor the project to ensure transparency, value for money, and long-term sustainability.
The NAMA Chief Executive expressed appreciation to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, for facilitating the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approval that enabled the project.
He also commended NAMA’s management and staff for their professionalism throughout the contracting process, particularly the Legal Services Department for ensuring due process and regulatory compliance.
Earlier, the Director of Legal Services and Company Secretary, Mrs. Rita Egbadon, described the contract signing as a landmark achievement, noting that it was the outcome of months of careful legal structuring and risk management aimed at protecting public interest and safeguarding the agency’s institutional integrity.
