The competition which begins tomorrow is billed to hold daily until Dec. 18 at the agency’s sports centre, located on its headquarters in Abuja.

Chairperson of the competition’s Organising Committee, Mrs Dorcas Jonah, told NAN in an interview that the participants are drawn from all departments and ranks in the company.

“We have had a good response from members, both in the senior and junior staff categories. Also, the enthusiasm shown so far, especially at training, has been commendable.

“In fact, the number of participants could have been higher but for the fact that we closed registration today (Thursday) in order for the draws to be made,’’ she said.

Jonah said the tournament is going to be for male and female participants, with competition in the male singles, female singles, male doubles and team events.

“It is a competition for both male and female, and we have allowed many events to make it very exciting and the matches will be played from noon to 6 p.m. daily to allow for massive support for those playing,’’ she said.

Jonah who is also Chairperson of the agency’s Sports Committee was confident of a smooth event that would justify the rationale behind organising it.

She said: “I am very confident that with the intending participants’ enthusiasm and the preparations we have made so far, the competition, we will be smooth and enriching.

“It is only by having such a competition that we can justify the moral and financial commitment of the agency’s management, to staff welfare and fitness.’’

She praised the NAN management led by Mrs Remi Oyo, the Managing Director, for the serious interest it had taken in the well-being of the agency’s staff.

“The management has always believed that it is only when the agency staff are in good state of health that they can be useful to the agency, themselves and their families.

“This is why we have had series of health programmes. This is also why a sports competition was introduced to complement it all,’’ she said.
