The Nigerian Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the recent wave of attacks in communities within Plateau State.
At least 15 persons were reported killed on Thursday by armed men in two communities in Bokkos and Mangu local government areas of Plateau State.
Among the dead is a 200-level Computer Science student of Plateau State University in Bokkos.
Reacting to the development, NANS National Senate President, Ekundina Segun Elvis, in a statement on Saturday, urged the Plateau State Government and security operatives to redouble their efforts in securing the state and ensuring the protection of lives and property.
The statement read in part: “We vehemently condemn these senseless attacks and call for immediate and thorough investigations to swiftly bring the perpetrators of these heinous crimes to justice. It is imperative that the government and relevant security agencies prioritize the safety and security of all citizens, with particular attention to the vulnerable student population.
“NANS urges the Plateau State Government and security operatives to redouble their efforts in securing the state and ensuring the protection of lives and property. We implore all residents, including students, to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities without hesitation.
“The safety and security of our communities are a collective responsibility, and we must all unite in solidarity to combat the scourge of insecurity and restore lasting peace in Plateau State. NANS stands firmly with the affected communities during this challenging period and extends our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, offering our unwavering support and solidarity.
“In memory of those who have tragically lost their lives, and in the spirit of preventing further bloodshed, NANS calls for urgent and decisive action to address the root causes of these attacks and ensure that justice is served swiftly and comprehensively.
“We urge for sustained efforts towards fostering peace, reconciliation, and mutual understanding among all segments of society. Let us honor the memory of the fallen by working tirelessly towards a future where such senseless violence is but a dark chapter in our past.”
