The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Diaspora recently met with the Ministry of Education to discuss critical issues affecting Nigerian students studying abroad.

NANS Diaspora President, Chris Juwon Fayomi, in a statement said during the discussions, the Ministry assured “us that our demands would be addressed promptly.”

The statement quoted the federal government to have reaffirmed the integrity of academic credentials from diaspora accredited institutions.

Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, emphasized the validity of certificates from recognized institutions, addressing concerns about qualifications from Benin, Togo, and other neighboring countries.

Sununu highlighted that accreditation is crucial and confirmed that certificates from accredited institutions in these countries are valid.

He also underscored the pivotal role of education in eradicating poverty, stating, “Education is key to eradicating poverty.” He emphasized the importance of qualitative education for national development and poverty alleviation. This aligns with the revised Student Loan Act, which underscores President’s commitment to expanding access to quality education and providing comprehensive support to students.

However, Fayomi raised specific demands regarding the Benin and Togo saga and the outstanding payments for Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) scholars.

“The Minister has released a statement addressing these demands and has committed to working closely with NANS Diaspora to compile a comprehensive list of accredited schools in Benin and Togo.

“NANS Diaspora is committed to assisting the government in the accreditation process to ensure that it is carried out correctly and transparently. We believe that our collaboration with the Ministry of Education will enhance the quality and recognition of educational institutions, benefiting Nigerian students abroad and fostering national development.

“We appreciate the Ministry’s swift action on our demands and look forward to continued cooperation to achieve our shared goals,” the statement added.
