NANS statement was in response to a publication in a national daily entitled: “13 dormant education agencies got N36.77 billion.”
It said that while it was proper for government to cut down the size of government considering the fall in revenues, it was necessary to be cautious in taking such steps.
In the statement issued by NANS President, Comrade Tijani Usman, the student’s body argued that most of the agencies were set up through legislation for specific purposes, adding that if such agencies had failed, it would not be out of place to assess the performance of heads of such agencies, rather than scrapping them.
“We are not unaware of the failure of some of these agencies to meet their constitutional responsibilities. As a pressure group, we have over the time queried the performances of some of these agencies to no avail. It is our thinking that the agencies lagging behind in their responsibilities are strengthened and those existing without legislation expunged.”
The statement added that the leadership of NANS was assessing the performance of these agencies with a view to making recommendations to the president.
It noted that for any meaningful decision to be taken in the sector, all stakeholders, particularly NANS, must be consulted rather than depending on the views of the so-called legal professionals and public affairs commentators
