The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed to both the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government’s negotiation team to urgently find a workable and lasting solution to the current industrial dispute threatening the stability of Nigeria’s education sector.

In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, NANS said the ongoing strike by ASUU could derail the unprecedented peace and progress achieved in the nation’s tertiary institutions over the last two academic years.

He commended the government’s initiatives, including the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), removal of tertiary institutions from the IPPIS platform, reversal of the 40 percent IGR remittance policy, and enhanced TETFund interventions for infrastructure and security upgrades.

Despite these achievements, NANS lamented that miscommunication and delays in implementing existing agreements have created avoidable tension in the university system.

NANS further said it has secured assurances from both sides of their readiness to resume dialogue once the meeting is properly reconvened. The student body therefore urged the government to reconvene talks immediately and called on ASUU to fully participate in good faith.

“Nigerian students, many of whom rely on educational loans, cannot afford another disruption. We urge both ASUU and the Federal Government to reach a concrete resolution within the next seven days to safeguard the future of millions of students,” Oladoja said.
