The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), yesterday, arraigned one Michael Nwafor before an FCT High Court in Maitama, for allegedly battering his wife.

Prosecuting counsel, Barrister Rebecca Elechi, told the court that Nwafor allegedly committed the offence on Aug. 18, 2016 when he allegedly hit his wife, Ginika on her face and battered her.

Elechi said Nwafor’s alleged action is contrary to Section 19 (1) of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015, an offence punishable with three years imprisonment or a fine of N200,000 or both.

Nwafor, a resident of Gwarinpa village, Abuja, however denied the charge when read to him.

His counsel, Barrister Cyril Opara, thereafter made an oral bail application, adding that, if granted, the defendant would not jump bail but make himself available throughout the trial.

Without objection from the prosecution counsel who said the defendant is already enjoying administrative bail, the trial judge, Justice Peter Affen, held that the bail application was in line with the procedure of the court.

He granted him bail on the existing administrative bail granted him by NAPTIP and adjourned the matter to November 14 for trial.
