Speaking at the event in Abuja, NAPTIP boss, Mrs. Beatrice Jedy-Agba, said the signing of the MoU is borne out of the desire to aggressively tackle human trafficking and its attendant consequences on the young population of our country.
She said available information shows that thousands of children and young persons are taken from Nigeria to other West African countries as well as Europe, Asia and the Middle East where they are subjected to various forms of exploitation.
She said collaboration and cooperation are key to checking these practices and to maximizing limited resources in combating trafficking in persons, adding that mainstreaming trafficking in persons in the curricular of primary and secondary schools is a great prevention strategy which is in tandem with the slogan “Catch them young”.
She assured NERDC of the agency’s commitment on the project saying it will emerge a huge success and put in place a sustainable and enduring structure for the fight against trafficking in persons.
Executive Secretary of NERDC, Professor Godswill Obioma, said the MOU is expected to kick start the process of developing a stand-alone curriculum and subsequent infusion into the Basic and Senior Secondary Education as well as the identification of the areas of research on trafficking in persons issues.
 He said, while NAPTIP and NERDC have a good working relationship, the MOU was drafted to serve as a guide for the organizations in the implementation and realization of set objectives as it captures all the key areas of partnership including the responsibilities of each organization and the time lines.
