The training was organized by National Agency for Trafficking in Persons and Other Related Matters, Kano zone.

The zonal officer in-charge of the anti-human trafficking agency, Superintendent Ahmed Bello, said the training of officers of the immigration service in a bid to fight human trafficking was the first of its kind.

According to him, passport issuing officers during the training, were armed with techniques on how to identify, arrest and rescue victims of human trafficking right from the point when they requested to acquire Nigeria’s international passports.   

“The training is the first of its kind, it was organized based on a request  to NAPTIP by comptroller general of the Nigeria Immigration Service , this led to the organizing of a train the trainers programme here in Kano for passport issuing officers  for thirty immigration officers responsible for issuing passports, selected from ten northern states,” he said.

He added that “international passport worldwide is seen as an instrument of boosting the image of a nation or all will agree with me that the Nigeria international passport at the international arena is viewed as the cheapest and easiest to be acquired and also as an instrument aiding and abetting transnational organized crime in the trafficking of persons.”

The participants were drilled on how to effectively network and share information alongside other security agencies, as well as how to handle children who have conflict with the law on security issues and their implication in the issuing of international passports.

Kano State Police Commissioner, Alhaji Maman Chafe, assured that the state command of the police force would work closely with other security agencies in the fight against human traffickers.
