The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has stated that the country’s health sector is facing a grave crisis, claiming that a ratio of one doctor serving over 9,000 patients is unacceptable, as the standard requirement is one doctor to 600 people.

The president of NARD, Dr Muhammed Usman Suleiman, disclosed this to newsmen in Lokoja.

The association tasked the Federal Government to implement its demands to improve the welfare of its members in order to mitigate brain drain syndrome affecting the sector.

Against this backdrop, the association renewed its call to the Federal Government to re-absorb five doctors sacked by the management of Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja (FTHL).

The sacked doctors were allegedly dismissed in May 2024 and August 2025 by the hospital’s management led by the then Chief Medical Director, Dr Olatunde Alabi, for their involvement in union activities in the hospital.

Dr Suleiman said the association, in its 45th Annual General Meeting (AGM), gave the Federal Government a 30-day deadline to meet a series of outstanding welfare and policy demands affecting its members.

The president of NARD said: “Today is the 18th day of the 30-day ultimatum that NARD gave to the Federal Government to implement our demands, among which is the reinstatement of five doctors sacked at FTH Lokoja.”
