“This is another higher level of environmentally sustainable fertilizer more than organic fertilizers. During our last D-8 meeting in Iran, many countries of the D-8 were producing bio-fertilizers, including Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iran and the rest.
“Bio-fertilizer uses microbial organisms to fix nitrogen from the air. So, you don’t need to buy urea. When you buy urea you are basically trying to supply nitrogen to the plant through those chemicals.
“Bio-fertilizers contain certain microns, which would fix the nitrogen on air on the plant. When you give it phosphate rock, which is not soluble, the bacteria will process it and fix your phosphate on the plant and when you supply potash, it will fix it on the plant.
“So, it is even at a higher level of environmentally friendly fertilizers than the organic, because you are using natural microbial organisms. We have already put up the plant to be commissioned soon,” Professor Bugaje said.
On organic fertilizer, Bugaje advised the federal government to reduce the importation of chemical fertilizers and concentrate on the organic in order to safeguard the environment.
Bugaje said for the institute to become independent and competitive in all spheres of chemical research and production, it requires N5 billion in five years.
