The Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the federal government to commence the rehabilitations of Mokwa-Jebba-Sa`adu road and Eleme-Obiogbo road otherwise its members will stop commercial vehicle operations across the country.
National President of NARTO, Alhaji  Kassim Bataiya  issued this ultimatum at a press conference attended by NARTO, PTD and NURTW members in Abuja.
Alhaji Bataiya  said  that the bad state of Nigerian roads have led to frequent loss of drivers` lives  and  vehicles breakdown which has  negatively affect good return for operators of  haulage business  in the country.
He said that the ownership of all commercial vehicles involved in the movement of passengers, goods and services is 100 percent in the hands of private investors with no government intervention.
He said, “It is clear that about 55 percent to 60 percent of our roads are in a serious state of disrepair, however, government should find a way of funding the construction, repairs and maintenance of the road for quick economic growth.”
He said aside the loss of lives; deplorable roads is endangering the lives of drivers  as armed robbers take advantage of slow movement of vehicles at  pot holes spots  to unleash terror on its members.
