In a bid to ensure strong participation in the forthcoming National Sports Festival in Ogun State, the Nasarawa State Government has opened a training camp for its contingents.
Daily Trust reports that the camp, situated at the Special School in Lafia, the Nasarawa state capital was officially declared open by the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Yakubu Kwanta.
Addressing the athletes, Kwanta employed them to remain dedicated, committed and disciplined throughout the training period, urging them to avoid anything that would be inimical to the progress of their training.
He, however, stressed that early preparation is essential to achieving glory in the various events Nasarawa State will be competing in.
He disclosed that the state government has made provisions for adequate logistics and funding to boost the morale of the athletes and enable optimal performance.
Mr Kwanta further encouraged the young sportsmen and women to reciprocate the state government’s investment in talent development, especially with the National Youth Festival, by displaying excellence in both character and performance.
Our correspondent reports that delegation leaders Beauty Timothy and Coach Bashir Bassi described the move as unprecedented, affirming that it is the first time the state government is initiating early preparations for a national sporting event.
They expressed confidence that the team is capable of securing gold medals across all events.
Nasarawa State contingents are expected to compete in several disciplines, including karate, athletics, and judo.
It will be noted that National Sports Festival (NSF) is a biennial multi-sport event which brings together athletes from all 36 states of Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to compete in a wide range of sports disciplines.
