The Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, has flagged off the sales of 930 metric tonnes of fertiliser for the 2020 cropping season.

The governor flagged off the sale at a ceremony at the government house on Tuesday.

He equally flagged off free distribution of 990 metric tonnes of ruminant feed supplements, as well as 80 metric tonnes of mineral salt provided by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to livestock farmers and pastoralists across the state.

This is the first time fertiliser sales to farmers is commencing before the cropping season in the state.

Gov. Sule said his administration was determined to ensure that agricultural potentials of the state were fully harnessed to create employment and wealth among the populace.

He said, “This is why we remain resolute in our commitment to ensure that the current economic meltdown occasioned by the coronavirus pandemic and its attendant effects on the economy does not affect the prospects of the agricultural sector; which is the mainstay of the economy of Nasarawa State.”

Gov. Sule disclosed further that the support from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture was aimed at mitigating farmers/herders conflicts towards ensuring sustainable development.

He recalled that recently the state entered into an agreement with the Lower Benue River Basin Development Authority (LBRBA) to access 500 hectares in Doma LGA for production of rice and provision of employment opportunities to cushion post-COVID-19 hardship.

He warned against diversion and racketeering in the distribution of the fertiliser, stressing that those handling the  sales would be held responsible for any anomaly in the distribution.

He equally cautioned individuals and groups against purchasing the commodity and selling to farmers at exhorbitant rates.
