The National Bassa Youth Development Association (NBYDA) has called on the federal government to wade into the situation that led to the people of Bassa in Toto LGA of Nasarawa State to be displaced from their land.

In a statement, the President of NBYDA, Isaac Daniel Ndazhaga, said since a communal conflict in the local government in 2018 displaced many, they had exhausted all efforts for the state government to provide the enabling environment to allow them to return.

Ndazhaga said, “Bassa people have a rich cultural heritage deeply intertwined with the land they have inhabited for generations. Their ancestral home in Toto LGA holds great significance to them, not only as a physical place, but also as a source of identity and historical connections.”

He added that, “Our parents can no longer afford theeEducation of their children due to the displacement.”

He further stated that it was disheartening that after five years the state government under Gov Abdullahi Sule had “never for once shown adequate concern over the displaced Bassa people; neither has he sent government representatives to see how this people are surviving or coping in the places of exile.

“The worst of it is that the governor has completely excluded the Bassa in his former and present administrations, and the Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, who happens to be from Toto LGA, has never for once moved a motion at plenary of the assembly to end the prolonged exile for the return of the Bassa to their ancestral homes.”
