Residents of Anguwan Albarka in Mararaba, Karu local government, have decried the deteriorating electricity supply in the area.
Aso Chronicle gathered that the residents of the area and the electricity distribution company have been at loggerheads over the electricity supply and the high bills charged them for more than one year.
According to the residents, the company resorted to supplying light only during the night thus affecting their businesses and other livelihood needs.
A barber, Saminu Samaila, lamented how the situation is killing their business.
“Our businesses rely heavily on electricity and our work is mostly during the day. The light is only supplied late in the night, around 9 pm, and it doesn’t last more than three hours. We have requested for meters but they are yet to deliver them,” he said.
Another resident, Mohammed Haruna, said “they normally don’t bring light during the day. We have been experiencing this for more than five months and they still bring excessive bills”.
A welder in the area, Sani Abdu, told Aso Chronicle that the community development association bought the transformers being used by the people and decided to disconnect all industrial businesses, forcing them to resort to the use of generators to power their facilities.
The community leader, Bello Ibrahim Lau, said the problem started when the community members failed to settle the bills of the light they consumed.
“The distribution company decided to reduce the amount of light they supply to the community because the people were not paying what they were consuming. We have done so much to intervene but the problems keep persisting because of lack of cooperation from the community members” he said.
He added that they have requested the distribution company to supply prepaid meters to the people of the community so that every household or business outfit will pay what they consume.
He pleaded with the community members to accept the prepaid metres that would be supplied next week as the only solution to their plight.
