The Nasarawa State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has strongly condemned the recent acts of hooliganism in Nigerian football, particularly the violent attack on Plateau United players by some Nasarawa United supporters.
In a statement signed by the state chairman, Comrade Smah George, and obtained in Lafia, SWAN described the incident as “uncalled for and needless,” especially as Nasarawa United had already secured the points needed to improve their league position.
As a consequence of the incident, the League Management Company has imposed a six million naira fine on Nasarawa United and banished the team to play their remaining home matches at Pantiamin Stadium in Gombe State.
SWAN expressed disappointment over the conduct of the fans, emphasizing that their actions have deprived local supporters of the opportunity to enjoy home games and have burdened the state with extra financial responsibilities, including travel and logistics.

The Association urged the Nasarawa State Football Association (NFA) to implement stricter disciplinary measures against unruly fans and called for a reorientation of supporters’ clubs to foster responsible behavior.
Comrade Smah also warned that such behavior could endanger the safety of players, officials, and fans, urging all well-meaning citizens to speak out against violence in football.
