A faith-based organisation, Nasrul-lahi-li Fathi Society of Nigeria, (NASFAT) on Thursday in Abakaliki marked their enlightenment week on ending violence against women and girls.

The group bemoaned the rise in rape cases in the country, especially during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The National President, Alhaji Abdulmumin Olaniyi Yusuf, said over 717 rape cases were recorded across the states of the federation within five months during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.

The president, who was represented by Alhaji Remi Adedibu, however, expressed hope that NASFAT campaign and other complementary activities in the six geopolitical regions of Nigeria would result in reducing the incidence of rape and other forms of violence against women and girls.

The Programme Manager of NASFAT, Ebonyi State, Mr Mukadam Sikiru Ibrahim-Olesin, emphasised the need for the society to speak up against injustice and violence against women and girls, noting that “correcting societal anomalies is a responsibility we are charged with as humans.”
