The Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, has called on the National Assembly to fast-track the repeal and enactment of the Federal Fire Service and Rescue Act.
He made the call during a programme to commemorate the International Firefighters’ Day 2026 in Abuja on Monday.
The current primary legislation governing the Federal Fire Service in Nigeria is the Fire Service Act of 1963. It transformed the then-Lagos Police Fire Brigade into the Federal Fire Service following Nigeria’s independence.
While there has been significant momentum to replace this law, it remains the active legal framework.
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the repeal of the 1963 Act in June 2022. In its place, the council approved the enactment of the Federal Fire and Rescue Service Establishment Act 2022.
However, despite the FEC approval, the new bill has faced delays in the National Assembly.
“I call on members of the National Assembly to fast-track the repeal and enactment of the Federal Fire Service and Rescue Act, and to include the establishment of fire stations in their constituency projects, which will go a long way in increasing our coverage and reducing response time.
“I also call on corporate Nigerians to include the Fire Service in their corporate social responsibility initiatives,” CG Adeyemi said.
The FFS CG said, within the first quarter of 2026, personnel responded to hundreds of incidents, saving over 1,700 lives and protecting property valued at over N300 billion, adding that, “These are not just numbers; they are lives preserved, livelihoods protected, and futures secured through the courage and commitment of our firefighters”.
