The last time I checked, the National Assembly, a body of people representing  all the constituencies in Nigeria and empowered by our constitution to make laws is still in place to look into our problems and find ways of resolving them through the instrument of constitutional amendments. Are we saying that we have sublet that vital legislative function to those ethnic and religious warriors under the umbrella of National Conference? Where is the report of the Obasanjo’s National political reform conference? We all knew then that the conference was set up to achieve a predetermined objective of tenure elongation. So, what is the object of Jonathan’s National conference? To actualize his 2015 ambition or to distract attention from the many woes that confront the country and people?
Personally, I choose both, because when our country is on fire (terrorism, corruption, kidnapping, ASUU strike, ASUP strike, Resident doctors’ strike…) somebody is busy trying to convene a Conference of bigots!
I was surprised when fortnight ago I heard Senate President David Mark throwing his weight behind the so-called conference. Mr Mark appeared to have surrendered his legislative responsibilities.
We are tired of this distraction. Mr President, let’s face the problems facing our country at the moment.
