Ahead of the national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the North-Central APC Forum has urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure the emergence of credible national officers during the exercise.

The APC national convention is scheduled to hold between March 27 and 28, 2026. National officers who will constitute the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) are expected to be elected at the convention.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, the Forum said it is important for the party to begin consultations toward electing individuals with proven experience and leadership capacity to fill all positions in the NWC, including that of national chairman.

The Forum called on President Tinubu to oversee a transparent selection process that would ensure qualified and competent individuals emerge at the convention to guide the affairs of the party.

According to the statement, the national chairman of the APC should be a person with sufficient experience, maturity, and leadership ability to manage a political party comprising prominent and accomplished members.

The Forum noted that the party’s growth, including the influx of new members from other political parties, makes strong and capable leadership essential.

“We believe this objective is very important because the APC is a party with many prominent politicians who have served and are still serving at the highest levels of governance. Electing capable individuals from such a distinguished pool of leaders should be a priority.

“There should be careful consideration in the selection of national officers, and that is why we urge Mr President to ensure that competent and widely acceptable individuals emerge as leaders of our party.

“A credible leadership of the APC should comprise individuals with the required qualities in terms of experience, leadership record, national acceptability, effective networks, and capacity to unify the party,” the statement said.

The Forum further stated that while academic qualifications are valuable, political experience and organisational capacity should also be key considerations in selecting the party’s national chairman.

It added that competence and past contributions to the party’s electoral successes should be taken into account.

The Forum also advised that religious considerations should not influence the emergence of the party’s national chairman, stressing that the individual should be inclusive and committed to the unity of members across faiths and ethnic backgrounds.

“Leading the APC requires capacity, experience, and the ability to build consensus across diverse groups. The national chairman should be someone who identifies with all members and prioritises the collective interest of the party and the country,” the statement added.
