National Interest: Shehu Sani reacts to Buhari”s comment

The Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani has reacted to President Buhari’s recent comment on the supremacy of National Interests.

President Buhari had at the opening of the 59th Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference (AGC) in Abuja stressed that National interest supersedes individual rights.

“Our apex court has had cause to adopt a position on this issue in this regard and it is now a matter of judicial recognition that; where national security and public interest are threatened or there is a likelihood of their being threatened, the individual rights of those allegedly responsible must take second place, in favour of the greater good of society,” he said.

Senator Sani, while reacting to the President’s comment via a tweet on Tuesday, stressed that undermining fundamental rights for the sake of National interest would result to loses on both counts.

He further stressed the need for a democratic system to strike a balance between securing itself as well as upholding the rights of citizens.

According to lawmaker; "When fundamental rights are sacrificed for the sake of National security, both will be lost. On matters of urgency, a democracy must balance its duty to secure itself and its obligations to uphold its distinctive and indispensable principles of freedom".
