The National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), National Library of Nigeria (NLN), Prof. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi, has expressed worry over the high rate of illiteracy in the country.
She spoke in Karshi, Abuja, at an event held in commemoration of the 2023 International Literacy Day.
The theme of this year’s literacy day celebration is: “Promoting Literacy for a World in Transition: Building the Foundation for Sustainable and Peaceful Societies.”
“In Nigeria, adult male literacy stood at around 71 percent, while female literacy was significantly lower at 53 percent. Note that this inequality hinders the country’s overall development.
“To bridge the literacy gap, especially in rural communities, we as individuals, communities, and the government must collaborate and take deliberate steps to advance literacy in Nigeria and, consequently, support world peace and sustainability,” Anunobi said.

The Secretary-General, National Commission for UNESCO (NATCOM-UNESCO), Mr. Olagunju Idowu, represented by Ezejiofor Frances, Secretary, Education Sector of the commission, said the event was apt, especially “now that emphasis is being laid on overcoming the literacy challenges in achieving the desired economic empowerment and acquisition of skills necessary for the nation’s technological advancement.”
Emir of Karshi, Alhaji lsmaila Dandaladi Muhammed, appreciated the NLN for organizing the event in his community.
