The National Library of Nigeria has organised a readership sensitisation campaign in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State.
The National Librarian/Chief Executive Officer, Professor Lanrie O. Aina, said the 2019 readership promotion campaign was in line with the present administration’s policy of reaching out to the vulnerable and poor in the semi-urban communities and custodial centres of the Nigerian Correctional Service across the country.
Prof. Aina, represented by the Deputy Director, Finance and Accounts, Mr Azeez A. T. said: “The main objective of the campaign is to encourage reading culture amongst Nigerians by way of carrying out sensitization activities and the provision of good reading materials.”
He said the campaign was the 3rd of a series planned to take place in the 36 states of the federation.
In her speech, the guest speaker, Hajiya Khadija Shuaibu of the Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kano, said parents have a greater role to play in instilling reading culture.
“In the past, our forefathers used to keep a mini library in the homes for research and that had a great impact on their children, but now all that has become history as people no longer attach importance to that,” she said.
She said government, society, organizations, schools and parents have a collective role to play in ensuring that the culture of reading is revived in the country.
In his remarks, the District Head of Ungogo, Alhaji Abdulkadir Chedi (Magajin Malam), stressed the need for more enrolment of the girl-child into both Islamic and western education schools for a better society.
