The Nigeria Archery Federation has announced that it will organise a National Open Championship from March 2 to 6 at the MKO Abiola stadium Abuja and the Mogadishu Barracks in Abuja.

The president of the federation, Alhaji Mohammed Abdullahi said the open championship will be used for selection of athletes who would represent Nigeria at the African championship slated for Abidjan in Cote d’Ivoire in July.

He added that the tournament would attract athletes from all over the country with the Military and Para-military also featuring.

Abdullahi said “19 African countries will participate at the African Championship. It therefore means that we must take our best athletes to the Championship and due to the Covid-19 pandemic we had a lull in our activities last year.

“We need to hit the ground running now and aspire to be among the elite archers in Africa.

The former Secretary General of Para-Soccer Federation of Nigeria also expressed confidence that Nigeria’s flag will be hoisted at the archery event at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.

He, however, concluded by saying “Nigerians are yet to come in terms with the sport and we are crawling at our pace. With time, we will get there.”
