Comr. Meshach Anthony Nwankwo, Deputy National President (National and Campus Affairs), National Association of University Students (NAUS), says his office has mediated a recent misunderstanding between students in the Ogun State and the personnel of the Police Special Fraud Unit (SFU), Lagos.

This is contained in a statement personally signed by Nwankwo on Friday and made available to newsmen.

The statement reads: “This is a clarification of the situation, and it addresses the misconceptions arising from videos circulating on social media. We urge the public to rely solely on information directly from the source.

“As part of an ongoing cyber fraud investigation, the PSFU’s operatives arrested some students from FUNAAB area on January 9, 2025, after receiving a petition alleging their involvement in fraudulent activities. The SFU’s actions were in line with their duty to question suspects and further their investigation.

“Following these concerns, Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, facilitated a roundtable discussion with student leaders in the State and immediately arranged a visit to the PSFU headquarters in Lagos for further clarification. The discussions were constructive.

“The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) does not condone any form of misconduct or fraudulent activities. FUNAAB students are hardworking, enterprising, and law-abiding and are key drivers of the agricultural sector in Nigeria with knowledge for excellence. While a few students may be under investigation, this absolutely does not reflect the values of the university as a whole.

“We urge Nigerian university students to avoid all dubious practices and fraudulent activities, instead focusing more on personal growth, skill development, and society building.

“We remain committed to creating a safe, sane, and conducive learning environment for students. We appreciate the support of the Ogun State CP Ogunlowo, the CP SFU, stakeholders and cadres of the Nigerian students constituency, sister students bodies, and the SFU leadership in resolving this issue and look forward to continued collaboration.”
