The Nigerian Navy in Akwa Ibom State has arrested three suspected smugglers with N16.8 million worth of rice.
The suspects were handed over to the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) alongside the 1,050 seized bags of rice which were being conveyed in four trucks.
Speaking during the handover of the rice to the NCS yesterday in Ikot Abasi, Commander of NNS Jubilee Base, Commodore Ayerinade Akinwale, said the rice was brought in from another country.
Akinwale said, “In the early hours of yesterday (Wednesday), personnel of the Nigerian Navy ship, Jubilee, went on patrol and intercepted rice smuggled from a neighbouring country.”
Receiving the trucks of rice, Assistant Comptroller of Customs, B.O. Olomu, said thorough investigation would be carried out to get to the root of the matter and expressed delight with the synergy between the navy and the customs.
