The Nigerian Navy in Akwa Ibom State has arrested four suspects in connection with the smuggling of 41 bags of contraband rice.

A fibre boat with 175 horsepower Yamaha outboard engine was also intercepted with the 50kg bags of rice said to be brought in from Cameroon.

Speaking yesterday in Ibaka during the hand-over of the suspects and items to the Nigeria Customs Service, the Commanding Officer, Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Ibaka, Mbo Local Government Area, Captain Yusuf Idris, said the Navy will continue to arrest smugglers no matter how much they attempt to evade arrested.

Receiving the suspects and items, Assistant Controller, Nigeria Customs Service, Ali Garko, who represented the Controller, Eastern Marine Command, NCS, Port Harcourt, Elton Edorhe, thanked the Nigerian Navy for making their work easier and appealed that they continue.

However, one of the suspects, China Osuji, said he boarded the boat to get to Lagos without knowing that the boat was carrying contraband rice.
