The Nigerian Navy Dockyard Limited, on Tuesday provided free medical treatment to over 500 inhabitants of Victory Island, Lagos.

The event tagged: “Medical Rhapsody” is among events outlined to mark the Nigerian Navy 69 anniversary.

The Admiral Superintendent of the Nigerian Navy Dockyard Limited, Lagos, Rear Admiral Ibrahim Shehu, who flagged off the medical outreach, stated that over 500 persons will attended to by the medical hand from the Nigerian Navy.

“It is to ensure that we reach out to our hosts and surrounding communities, to show goodwill, and to build good relationships with members of the general public.

“And in this regard, medical outreach enables us to provide basic medical services, spanning across from basic blood examinations, eye examinations, provision of eyeglasses, checking of blood pressure, providing some basic drugs for some basic treatment, and so on.

” And if need be, referrals are necessary that will be handled by the medical personnel to enable them to provide sufficient service to those that patronize the outreach.

“Mind you, the outreach is 100% free. There are no fee. It’s a completely free medical outreach. And it’s in support of the vision that enables us to build strong community relations between the armed forces, and in this case, particularly the Nigerian Navy, and the surrounding general public.

“We from the Naval Dockyard are privileged at this time to support the programs aimed at this year’s Navy Week to boost our medical outreach here in Victoria Island” he stated.

Speaking on why the Navy decided to use Victoria Island for the outreach, be said: “Well, we cannot totally declare this place a rich area, because the people in the surrounding area are mostly traders in ICT equipment. And they don’t reside here, but they conduct a significant portion of their business here, and they support the rural community here.

“For the record, last year, the outreach was conducted around the environs of the Oniru Palace. And this year, we decided to stretch it further to this area to support those that come to provide services for the residents who may not necessarily be high-income families.

“You can be rest assured that most of the patrons of this medical outreach are not necessarily residents domiciled here, but those that provide services for those residents that come here every day, and they are usually in the lower income bracket.

” We are looking at reaching out to about 500 people with various services. So, as you have seen during my very brief walk around, we have provisions, like I said earlier, dental services, optometry services, basic medical services, and even dispensing certain categories of basic drugs for ailments that are detected and tested.”
