The ambitions of Arthur Obi-Okafor (SAN) and Afam Osigwe to become the next presidents of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) were boosted last weekend by several lawyers.
Obi-Okafor, over the weekend received the endorsement of senior lawyers at the conclusion of the 5th NBA Criminal Justice Conference in Asaba, Delta State.
Hundreds of lawyers, who accompanied Jibrin Okutepa (SAN), Adesina Ogunlana of the Ikeja Branch, Stephen Abah of the Jos Branch, and member of the Young Lawyers’ Forum, who were at his residence in the state to pay homage at the end of the conference, commended him for a well-organised programme. They extolled his exceptional humility and leadership qualities.
Also, Osigwe was on April 19 invited to the Young Lawyers’ Forum National Summit in Lagos, where he interacted with the young lawyers.
Other aspirants to the post of President of NBA include: Prof Ernest Ojukwu (SAN) and Paul Usoro (SAN).
Meanwhile, Osigwe has condemned the arrest and remand of two lawyers representing embattled Senator Dino Melaye on April 25.
David Amaefula and Pius Udo-Inyang, who are of the law firm of Messrs Rickey Tarfa & Co. Abuja Office, were on Tuesday April 24 arrested by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) office Guzape after they were dispatched to the Zankli Medical Centre, Mabushi, Abuja to secure justice for Senator Melaye, who was being admitted there.
“If such unlawful actions by the security agencies continue unchecked, fundamental rights of people may not amount to much in such a climate of impunity,” Osigwe said.
“I deprecate this unsavory conduct. It must stop. These lawyers must be released forthwith and the charges against them dropped. We must rise up to ensure this recklessness stops. Enough is enough,” he said.
