The President of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Paul Usoro SAN, has said that late Emmanuel Aguma, the immediate past Attorney General of Rivers State, did not attain the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) through Bar politics.

Usoro, who said the news of the death of the legal icon came to him as a rude shock, added that the late state Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice left indelible marks on the legal profession.

“He did not earn that rank through Bar politics, he worked assiduously for it and was duly recognized and elevated by his peers and superiors. Of course, he and I had and still have a mentor in our revered elder brother, OCJ Okocha, SAN, who always showed us the pathway in combining scholarship and professional work with service to the Bar – may he, our dear OCJ live long,” the NBA president said.

The President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Justice B. A. Adejumo, also expressed grief over the sudden death.

Emmanuel Aguma (SAN) died on Friday August 10, 2018 after a brief illness. Born on 21 April 1961, Emmanuel became SAN three years before his death.

He was secretary of NBA, Port Harcourt branch 2000-2002; NBA NEC member 2000-2002 and 2004-2016; chairman of NBA Port Harcourt branch 2006-2008; secretary of NBA Section on Legal Practice 2007-2008; and member of the NBA Prosecution Team 2012-2015. He was also a member of the Body of Benchers up to his death.
