Two presidential candidates of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Chief Joe Kyari-Gadzama SAN and A.B Mahmoud are rallying the support of lawyers in Lagos ahead of the group’s forthcoming national election.
‎The two senior lawyers, who took turns to address the gathering of lawyers at the NBA Ikeja branch, Lagos, promised sustainability, reforms and improved welfare packages for lawyers.
Gadzama said the time has come for the body of lawyers to have in place a leadership that is trustworthy and not a surrogate of outside power brokers or a group of lawyers. He said his leadership will be quite effective at a time Nigerians are facing both political and economic challenges.
“At a time Nigeria is experiencing economic challenges, you will agree with me that we need someone ‎who has knowledge of economy. The current political scenario also needs someone who is dogged because the NBA is the country’s conscience, the eyes of the blind and the ears of the deaf,” Gadzama said.
 The lawyer who was a former ‎chairman, Abuja branch of the NBA, promised improved welfare package for lawyers especially the young ones and the aged.
He also assured on giving lawyers opportunities to participate in periodic training, seminars and conferences that will keep them in tune with modern trends.
On his part, Mahmoud said if elected, his administration will work tirelessly to restore sanity in ‎the profession.
He said professionalism will be a priority that would earn lawyers dignity among Nigerians.
“We are not comfortable with the current situation where issues of moral burden have been cast on some senior lawyers. My administration will ensure that the law profession is returned to the path of professionalism. We will ensure that there are regulations that will put checks to conducts, especially in following the rule of law,” Mahmoud said.
 A former attorney general of Kano State, Mahmoud also promised improvement in the welfare of lawyers, saying this is also a commitment he would ensure is entrenched ‎to better the lives of majority of the members.
