NBA releases guidelines for elections, re-adopts e-voting

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has said it has  re-adopted the use of electronic voting system (e-voting) for its upcoming elections for new national executive officers.

The Election Guideline Committee Chairman, Professor Auwalu Yadudu, said the association will make conscious efforts to conduct a rancor-free election.

This was in view of the decision of some aggrieved candidates in the past election who challenged the outcome of the election in court when the e-voting was adopted to elect the present leadership of the bar.

NBA President, Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN) and other national officers of the association are expected to bow out of office in about three months from now after the expiration of their tenure.

Professor Yadudu and other committee members who released the guidelines assured that the association will conduct a better election this time around.

He said‎ the Eastern zone is expected to produce the President and the 1st Vice President while the 2nd Vice President has been zoned to the‎ West and the General Secretary and the 3rd Vice President to the North.

The committee said, “Every member who is of financial good standing ‎is eligible to vote. It will be by e-voting. We’ve tried it before and we are perfecting it. Even, if you are out of the country, you can vote. Voting will last for 24 hours.

“We can assure you that we have made efforts to review what had happened in the last election and. We have taken measures to ensure that what we experienced at the last election does not arise again.

“We are engaging with our branches and we will do a better job this time around. We want this election to be as transparent and secure as possible. We have also reached out to our branches to give us clean data of their members. We know the importance of clean data in e-voting, so, we are leaving no stone unturned to ensure a hitch free exercise.”

‎According to the guideline, the election is expected to hold on July 27th and 28th.
